Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of mother¡¯s affectionate communication on playfulness and sociability of young children. Subjects of this study were 301 children (166 boys and 135 girls) aged between three and five who were
attending kindergartens located in Chungju City and Chungbuk Province. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, Cronbach¡¯s a, and Pearson¡¯s product-moment correlation coefficient using the SPSS 12.0 program, and path analysis was done by AMOS 7.0. The findings of this study showed that mother¡¯s affectionate communication had a direct effect on playfulness of young children regardless of children¡¯s gender. Higher affectionate communication of mothers led to higher playfulness of children. In particular, mother¡¯s affectionate communication had a direct effect on positive and negative sociability of young children regardless of children¡¯s gender. Higher affectionate communication of mothers led to a higher level of positive sociability and a lower level of negative sociability of children. Affectionate communication of mothers also had an indirect effect on children¡¯s positive sociability mediated by children¡¯s playfulness.
